Measuring Audience Engagement Beyond Page Views

Why page views are not enough, and which engagement metrics such as scroll depth, return visits, and video watch time reveal real interest.

Page views show how often a page was loaded, not whether anyone read it. Pair them with metrics that reflect attention, such as scroll depth, average reading time, and the share of readers who finish a long article. A story with fewer visits but strong completion may be doing more useful work than a viral piece people leave immediately.

Track return visits and newsletter sign-ups as signs of loyalty. For video, measure the percentage of viewers who watch past the first ten seconds and where they drop off. Review these numbers weekly with the editorial team, so decisions about topics and formats are based on how people actually engage.
