Choosing Video Formats for Web and Mobile

How to choose video aspect ratios, resolutions, and compression settings so your footage loads quickly and looks sharp on phones and desktops.

Choose your aspect ratio before you shoot. Horizontal 16:9 suits websites and long documentaries, while 9:16 fits mobile feeds and stories. A square or 4:5 frame often performs well in social timelines. Shooting in a higher resolution than you need gives you room to crop for each platform without losing quality.

For web delivery, export in a widely supported codec such as H.264 with a sensible bitrate, then test loading speed on a mid-range phone over a slow connection. Provide captions, keep the file size proportional to its length, and lazy-load videos below the fold so they do not slow down the first screen.
